Do Lactation Cookies Work?

There are tons of recipes out there for lactation cookies, and even ready-made store bought cookies as well. So, do they really work? The short answer is - no, probably not.

There is currently no strong evidence indicating that lactation cookies make a significant difference on actual or perceived milk supply (PMID: 36921902). If that’s true, why are they so popular? In my opinion, moms who are struggling with milk supply and/or breastfeeding issues want a quick and easy fix. I mean, honestly, who wouldn’t? I can’t think of many things easier than eating a cookie!

Here’s the thing - lactation cookies are unlikely to hurt your supply, and may have the potential to have a positive impact just due to the caloric content alone. The problem is that they have the potential to delay proper lactation support and intervention, which can directly harm a mother’s breastfeeding success.
